FUNDAMENTALS OF PREMADE LASHES
When it comes to creating a volume set, lash artists are often faced with the choice between crafting handmade lash fans or opting for the convenience of premade lash fans. While handmade fans offer a bespoke approach that allows for precise customization of each client’s natural lashes, premade lash fans present a time-efficient alternative without compromising on the fullness volume sets are renowned for.
The fundamentals of using premade lash fans revolve around understanding the structure and weight of these fans, ensuring they are applied in a manner that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also prioritizes the health of the natural lashes. By selecting premade fans that are proportionate in weight and size to the client's natural lashes, lash artists can achieve a beautifully balanced volume set. Moreover, the consistency in fan size and shape that premade options offer can streamline the application process, making it easier to maintain uniformity throughout the set. This balance between efficiency and quality is what makes premade lash fans a popular choice among lash artists looking to deliver beautiful volume lashes without the typical long appointment time required for creating handmade fans.
WEIGHT APPROPRIATE LASH FAN
Choosing the appropriate fan for each natural lash is a critical step in ensuring both the aesthetic appeal and the health of the lashes. The key consideration here is the weight of the premade fan compared to what each natural eyelash can support. It's essential to start by assessing the length, thickness, and overall strength of the natural lashes. Stronger lashes can support heavier fans without causing stress or damage, while finer and more delicate lashes require lighter fans to ensure they are not weighed down. There are many factors when determining the weight of the fan.
The longer the lashes are creating the fan – the heavier it will be. The thicker each lash is in a fan (0.03 compared to 0.07 for example) – the heavier it will be. The more lashes used to create the fan (5D vs 8D for example) – the heavier it will be. Keep this in mind while choosing your fans.
TIP: it will be beneficial to have multiple lengths and diameters available to choose from. Alternatively, if you spot a lash in the early stages of its growth cycle – you could always handmake a smaller, lighter fan to apply.
By carefully selecting fans that are an appropriate weight for the natural lashes, lash artists can create volume sets that are not only visually stunning but also comfortable and safe for the client to wear, promoting better retention and healthier lash growth in the long run.
PICK-UP & APPLICATION OF PREMADE LASH FANS
Picking up a premade fan requires a technique that is both precise and gentle. Typically, the best way to pick up a premade fan is by the base of the fan, not the tips. Carefully grip the base of the premade fan, ensuring you have a secure hold on the fan's base without disturbing the formation of the lashes within it. It's crucial to maintain a steady hand and apply the right amount of pressure to avoid crushing the base or deforming the fan. Once you’ve removed the fan from the strip, you can place the fan back down on the tile to pick the fan up from the same position you would when applying a handmade fan (around the middle of the fan). This will ensure the fan doesn’t get damaged, which can happen if your tweezers don’t have a firm grasp on the tips of the fan.
SIDE NOTE: Omnigrip tweezers have such a tight grip that when you’re picking up a fan with these tweezers, you will be able to pick up the fan from above the strip, without damaging the fan.
Now, you’re ready to apply the fan to a natural lash. If you haven’t already, start by isolating a single natural lash. Once the fan is securely held and you’re dipping the fan in your adhesive, be sure to pick up slightly more adhesive than you would when “wrapping” a handmade fan on a natural lash. You want to make sure there’s enough adhesive to completely coat around the base of the fan, as well as the natural lash you’re about to attach it to. Align the fan with the natural lash you've isolated, and gently place the base of the fan close to the lash line without touching the skin. Mastering this technique not only ensures a neat and full finish but also contributes to better retention of the lash extension.
LASH FAN RETENTION
Achieving great retention with premade volume fans can be challenging for many lash artists, but with the right techniques and attention to detail, it's certainly achievable. Let’s recap the essential tips to ensure your premade fans hold as long as possible:
-
Choose an appropriate fan size and weight for each natural lash, ensuring the fans are not too heavy, which can cause premature shedding as well as possible damage to the natural lash.
-
Same as any lash application, pay meticulous attention to the isolation of each natural lash before application. A clean lash line and proper isolation will provide an irritation-free, strong base for the adhesive to bond.
-
Using a high-quality lash adhesive that is suitable for your speed, as well as the humidity and temperature of your work environment, can significantly enhance retention. Remember, you’ll want to use slightly more adhesive than you typically would while working with handmade volume fans.
-
Educate your clients on aftercare and advise them on how to clean and care for their lash extensions properly to maintain their look, health, and longevity.
We hope you find these tips for working with premade fans helpful.
Happy lashing!
