Your Guide to Lash Diameters

In this blog, we’ll break down everything you need to know about lash diameters, so you can elevate your artistry and deliver stunning results for every client. Let’s dive in!

Why is it so important to consider lash thickness for extensions?

In the past, when extensions were just becoming popular, they were mainly prevalent among showbiz stars or bohemian representatives. Today, it's not surprising anymore, and not only public figures but any girl willing to change her look can easily do it. All you need to know are the basic requirements for selecting lashes for extensions.

Today, there is a huge variety of materials used, masters work in different techniques, and create all sorts of effects, so sometimes making a choice is not so easy.

A few years ago, lash extensions could only be realized in one technique: using lashes of standard size and thickness of 0.25 mm. But over time, there has been a real breakthrough in this field, with many material options emerging. Today, it's not so difficult to choose a technique; clients choose between cluster and individual lash extensions.

The Choice of Lash Thickness for Extensions

Since the selection of possible lash diameters today is quite extensive, clients with any type of appearance can find the most suitable option for themselves. In general, the thickness of the lashes depends on the natural appearance and the desired result.

From the perspective of possible lash thickness, extended lashes can be divided into the following groups:

Ultra-thin. Their diameter usually ranges from 0.03 to 0.07 mm. They are soft, flexible, and look extremely natural after extension. This thickness is suitable for volume sets. They are used in volume, mega volume and Russian volume lash sets (from 2D to 7D).

Thin. These combine hairs of three diameters: 0.10, 0.12, and 0.15 mm. Artificial lashes with a diameter of 0.10 mm are characterized by good flexibility and elasticity. They are very soft to the touch, making them extremely difficult to distinguish from real ones. Hairs with diameters of 0.10 and 0.12 mm are preferable for clients wanting a "classic lash set". With 0.15 mm diameter lashes, you can achieve a mascara effect, which is highly desirable for women who don't want to spend time on makeup in the morning.

Thick. Their diameter is usually 0.18 and 0.20 mm. Since the thickness is quite large in this option, the lashes are characterized by increased rigidity. Extension using such lashes looks very bold and bright, the gaze becomes more open, expressive, and sensual. It is worth choosing this thickness for women who naturally have strong natural lashes; otherwise, the result may be somewhat extravagant and unnatural. Moreover, such hairs are often used in classic extensions.

When it comes to extensions, they are quite heavy, so only healthy natural lashes can bear them.

Ultra-thick lashes usually have a diameter of 0.25 or 0.30 mm. Such lashes are perfect for formal occasions, fashion shows, music video shoots, or photo sessions. They look very striking; however, comfort will be compromised as these lashes tend to poke, constantly bend, and break. Artificial fibers of such diameter look completely unnatural, although they attract attention due to their glossy shine. They can be worn for a short period. Prolonged use risks the loss of natural lashes, even the strongest and healthiest ones. The main advantage of using 0.25 mm and 0.30 mm diameter lash extensions is that they take very little time.

Many clients have heard from lash artists seemingly unrelated terms to their work — "mink", "silk", "columns", "sable". These names of artificial fibers can indicate their diameter. It's easier and clearer for clients to understand the thickness of the material precisely from these terms than to try to determine the numerical expression of a particular diameter.

Silk and mink lashes are usually ultra-thin. Thin hairs fall under the concept of "columns", while thick ones are referred to as "sable". The thickness of lash extensions can be determined from photos usually provided by the lash artist as samples.

Often clients are mistaken, thinking that all these names are given to lashes because of their origin and determine the material they are made of. However, this is not the case since the lashes used for extensions are made of synthetic materials. Using animal-derived fibres is impossible due to the possibility of allergic reactions.

Mink lashes have a thickness ranging from 0.12 to 0.15 mm. This type of artificial fiber is most commonly used by technicians. The material looks as natural as possible, but it can also be used to create a festive look. Cluster extensions are possible (if, of course, the natural lashes are strong and healthy), as well as individual hairs.

Silk lashes are quite thin, with a thickness not exceeding 0.1 mm. These lashes are suitable for everyday wear and look very striking and natural at the same time. This material is used in individual lash extensions; it's very lightweight and therefore suitable for girls with weakened natural lashes.

Choosing the Optimal Thickness of Eyelash Extensions

When choosing the optimal thickness of eyelashes for extension, it is important to consider individual characteristics. It is essential to take into account the condition of one's own lashes and, undoubtedly, to consider the client's opinion and facial features.

Best Lash Thickness for Classic Sets

Want to offer a simple yet beautiful set of eyelash extensions for both masters and clients? Sticking to the classic style is the way to go. It provides the desired volume, especially for those with thin natural lashes, while maintaining a more authentic look.

The thickness that works best for the classic look is 0.12 mm, 0.15 mm, 0.18 mm, 0.20 mm, and 0.25 mm. However, eyelash extensions with a thickness of 0.15 mm stand out as the most popular option as they leave a natural dense look that complements the classic set of lashes. 0.20 mm is the second most popular thickness, although it is best applied to thick and healthy natural lashes.

Best Thickness for Hybrid Sets

A hybrid lash set is a blend of classic lashes and volume lashes, creating a look that combines the best of both styles. This technique mixes individual extensions (classic) with handmade or pre-made lash fans (volume) to achieve a more textured and multidimensional effect. When it comes to hybrid, the thickness of the extensions can range from 0.05–0.10 for volume and 0.10 to 0.20 for classics.

Best Lash Thickness for Volume Sets

If you're looking for thick and stunning lashes, opt for eyelash extensions with a thickness ranging from 0.03 mm to 0.05 mm. Mega volume lashes give the eyes a denser and darker appearance, emphasizing the eyes.

These eyelash extensions are virtually weightless. Therefore, eyelash extension specialists can apply multiple lashes to the eyelids without weighing them down. To create a mega volume look, up to 20 layers of 0.03 mm lashes or up to 15 layers of 0.05 mm lashes are applied on top of each other. As a result, a glamorous fan of lashes is created, which rightfully corresponds to its name "mega."

Best Lash Thickness for Russian Volume Set

A recent trend in the industry, which started in Russia in 2010, Russian volume eyelash extensions still have a large audience today. Aimed at giving the lashes a soft, fluffy appearance, this extension allows the client to feel confident and stunning even without makeup and mascara.

Russian volume eyelash extensions are aimed at filling in the gaps left by natural lashes using layers of light extension. This result is achieved with several layers of 0.06 mm and 0.07 mm lashes. For stunning Russian volume extensions, up to 5 layers are typical, but we recommend 2 or 3 layers for clients with very thin natural lashes.

In conclusion, understanding  lash diameters is essential for both lash artists and clients alike. From ultra-thin to thick lashes, each diameter serves a specific purpose, whether it's achieving a natural look or making a bold statement. By considering factors such as natural lash health, desired volume, and personal preferences, clients can work with their lash artists to create the perfect set of extensions.

Remember, the key to stunning lashes lies not only in their thickness but also in the expertise of the artist and the quality of the materials used. So, whether you're aiming for a mega volume, Russian volume, or classic volume look, let your lashes do the talking and frame your eyes with beauty and elegance.
